“Khayamia” in Arabic means “Tentmakers”.
Tentmakers are men of all ages who sit crossed-legged on platforms sewing wall hangings, pillows, bedspreads and table covers. Made from cotton/cotton blend fabrics, each of these unique product is made by skilled Egyptian artisans who have learned the traditional art of patchwork passed down through generations.
Centuries ago, when the tentmakers first began their work, they mainly made huge tents that were used for weddings, funerals and religious events in detailed geometric designs that resembled the wall and floor patterns of Cairo’s medieval mosques. Today they also sew village scenes of local folk. |
